The two paths of arraigo social
Article 127.c) of the Regulation sets out an alternative worth understanding before moving a single paper.
Path one: family ties. If there are ties with other foreign nationals holding a residence permit, and sufficient financial means are shown, the route is covered. The ties that count are specific: spouse or registered partner, and first-degree relatives in the direct line, that is, parents and children. Siblings, uncles and cousins do not count.
Path two: integration effort. If there is no such tie, integration effort is assessed, proved with a favourable report issued by the autonomous community where you live, or by the town hall where the community has so provided.
It is an enormous practical difference. The integration report is the bottleneck of the whole procedure: it depends on a different administration, with its own deadlines and criteria. Being able to avoid it by proving a family tie shortens the file by weeks.
Financial means: what 100% of the IPREM means
The Regulation requires proof of sufficient means of support reaching, in any case, at least 100% of the IPREM. The IPREM is the public multi-purpose income indicator and its amount is set each year by the Budget Law, which is why we do not write the figure here: check the official source and apply the one in force when you file.
Points that tend to slip by:
- The means must be available in Spain. An account in your home country with enough balance does not meet the requirement.
- The means may come from the relatives with whom the tie is proved. They need not be your own.
- If the requirements of article 84 are met, you may claim that the means come from self-employed activity.
The social integration report in Valencia
Where it is needed, the report is requested at the town hall of your habitual address. In the Valencian Community the request form is the Generalitat's and the procedure is published in its electronic office.
The report covers, among other factors, the time at the habitual address, the financial means available and integration efforts through social, employment and cultural programmes. Spanish courses, vocational training, volunteering and participation in associations count, and should be documented with certificates, not screenshots.
The issuing period is one month from the request, and the regional or local administration must send the report electronically to the competent immigration office. If the report is not issued in time, and that is duly proved, the requirement may be shown by any means of evidence admitted in law: request receipt, course certificates, social services reports, letters from associations.
For the padrón, the starting point of all this, there is a separate guide: padrón registration in Valencia.
If you still do not know which type fits, answer six questions in the arraigo guidance test.
General requirements, asked for in every type
Article 126 of the Regulation requires them to be met cumulatively, that is, all at once:
- Being in Spain when the application is filed and not being an applicant for international protection with an open file.
- Having stayed in Spain continuously for at least the two years before the application. Arraigo familiar is the only exception: it requires no minimum stay.
- Not being a threat to public order, security or public health.
- Having no criminal record in Spain or in the countries of residence during the five years before entering Spain, for offences provided for in Spanish law.
- Not being listed as non-admissible in countries with which Spain has an agreement to that effect.
- Not being within a period of commitment not to return to Spain.
- Having paid the processing fee.
- Not holding a stay or residence permit and not being a party to another procedure to grant, extend, renew or modify permits. This last requirement is new: it was added by Royal Decree 316/2026 and has been in force since 16 April 2026.
That last point deserves attention because it changes the strategy of many files: you can no longer have two procedures open at once. If an application is in progress, it must be decided or withdrawn before applying for arraigo.
How the procedure works
A permit for exceptional circumstances requires no visa and is applied for in person before the competent body, except for minors or people who need support to exercise their legal capacity, where their legal representative may file it.
With the application you provide a full copy of your valid passport, registration card or travel document valid in Spain; the signed employment contract where required; and the documents proving the specific situation claimed. For arraigo you also provide the criminal record certificate from the country or countries where you lived during the five years before entering Spain. The immigration office requests the Central Criminal Records report and the police report ex officio.
There are two cases where third-country records need not be proved: having stayed continuously in Spain for the five years immediately before the application, or having proved it in a previous application within those five years without having left since.
If the documents are incomplete, the administration requests correction with a deadline that cannot exceed fifteen days. If it is not corrected, the file is closed as withdrawn. That is by far the most frequent reason for the lost files that reach this gestoría.
Tracking the file needs no phone calls: see how to check the status of an immigration file. Once the permit is granted, there is one month from notification to apply in person for the foreigner identity card.
Documents we ask for in the first review
- Full valid passport, every page, including stamped ones.
- Historical and collective padrón certificate, not the simple one.
- Proof of the two years from independent sources: healthcare, education, bank, rent, transfers.
- If you go by family tie: family book or legalised birth or marriage certificates, plus the relative's residence card.
- If you go by report: the report request receipt and everything proving integration.
- Proof of financial means available in Spain.
- Criminal record certificate from the country or countries of residence in the last five years, apostilled and translated.
We review that folder before filing and say what is missing. It is cheaper than a refusal.

Frequently asked questions
Do I always need the social integration report?
No. If you prove family ties with foreign nationals holding a residence permit (spouse, registered partner or first-degree relative in the direct line) and sufficient means, the report is not required. It comes into play when there is no such tie.
How much in financial means must I prove?
At least 100% of the IPREM in force when you apply, available in Spain. They may come from the relatives with whom you prove the tie, or from self-employed activity if article 84 of the Regulation is met.
What if the town hall does not issue the report in time?
The Regulation provides for it: if the report has not been issued within one month and you duly prove that, you may show the requirement by any means of evidence valid in law.
How long does the arraigo social permit last?
One year, extendable. Extension is conditional on proving an active job search with registration at the public employment service, save justified circumstances such as illness, disability or legal retirement age.
Can I work with arraigo social?
Yes, employed or self-employed, with no geographic or occupational limit while the permit is in force.
