How to book
The official channel is the DGT electronic office. The office sets a commitment unusual in the Spanish administration: to try to provide the appointment within fifteen days of the day you request it.
On the day you must identify yourself with the DNI of the person concerned or equivalent official documentation: passport, NIE or residence permit. Always take the original.
The DGT appointment is free and without commission. Its electronic office says so literally. Any website that charges you to get one is a private intermediary.
Who does not need to book
The DGT expressly lists several exceptions. Read them before wasting time looking for a slot:
- People aged 65 or over: may attend for any matter without an appointment, during the hours enabled for it.
- People with mobility problems who, after visiting a Driver Assessment Centre, must go in person to the Provincial Headquarters.
And these specific procedures do not require an appointment either:
- Resolving incidents about returned driving licences and expiry of the temporary authorisation.
- Filing written submissions, complaints and appeals.
- Completing an international driving permit started in the electronic office.
- Obtaining or renewing a licence for people with psychophysical limitations who cannot attend the assessment centres.
Exchanging a foreign driving licence
This is the procedure we are asked about most. Spain has exchange agreements with several countries, and the procedure and requirements depend on which is yours. The list of agreement countries is updated, so check it on the DGT's official site when you start and do not rely on old lists.
What almost all cases share: a psychophysical fitness report from a Driver Assessment Centre, the original licence, an identity document and the corresponding fee paid. If your country has no agreement, there is no exchange: you would have to obtain the Spanish licence through the ordinary procedure.

Vehicle transfer
Change of ownership has a deadline, and missing it has consequences for both seller and buyer: the seller remains the registered owner for fines and taxes until the transfer is recorded. That is why it pays to settle it quickly and not leave it pending.
Gestores administrativos can process the transfer online the same day, with no appointment and without either party going to Traffic.
Registering an imported vehicle
Registering a car brought from another country is a multi-stage procedure involving more than one body: technical sheet and inspection, taxes, and finally registration at Traffic. The DGT appointment is only the last step, and arriving without the complete prior documentation means starting again.
We explain it in full in registering a foreign car.
Duplicates and change of address
These are the quickest matters and also the ones most people do in person unnecessarily. A large share are settled directly online in the electronic office or from the miDGT app, without setting foot in the headquarters.
Checking, changing or cancelling your appointment
The DGT offers three ways to manage a booked appointment:
- Electronic office, from the appointment request application itself.
- miDGT app on your phone.
- Phone 060: automated information 24 hours a day and an agent Monday to Friday from 9:00 to 18:00. From abroad, the number given by the DGT is +34 902 887 060.
If you cannot attend, cancel. You free the slot for someone else and keep your headquarters' calendar from filling with ghost appointments.
ITV is not the same thing
Many searches for «cita previa» end at the ITV, but the vehicle technical inspection is carried out at authorised stations with their own appointment system, different from the DGT's. It is not a Traffic procedure and we do not handle it: book directly with your ITV station.
Exchange, transfer or registration?
We handle the whole file with Traffic: documents, fees and filing. In many cases you do not even need to book an appointment.
Frequently asked questions
How long does it take to get a DGT appointment?
The DGT states in its electronic office that it tries to provide it as soon as possible and, at least, within fifteen days of the day you made the request.
Can I go to the headquarters without an appointment?
Generally not, but there are express exceptions: people aged 65 or over may attend without one, and neither do those with mobility problems who must go to the headquarters after an assessment centre. Some specific procedures are also excluded, such as filing submissions, complaints and appeals.
Does the DGT appointment cost money?
No. The electronic office says so expressly: requesting an appointment is a free service with no commission. What does cost money are the fees for the procedure itself.
Which document do I take?
The DNI of the person concerned or equivalent official documentation: passport, NIE or residence permit. Always the original, plus the documents specific to the procedure.
How do I cancel an appointment I no longer need?
From the appointment request application in the electronic office, from the miDGT app or by calling 060.
What are the opening hours?
Monday to Friday in the mornings. Some large offices also attend on Thursday afternoons.
Can I transfer my car without going to Traffic?
Yes. Registered gestores administrativos process transfers online, with no appointment and without buyer or seller having to travel.
